As a non American they way I understand it is that because black people where historically mistreated in the US, their school curriculum kinda skipped over any black figureheads. This might not be relevant in your country, but black people played a sizable roll in US history. I think there's some controversy in it now, as it kinda limits the time people talk about big events such as the slave trade, and civil rights movement to a single month, and instead moving it into standard US history class. Again, not an American, so I may be missing some things, but I hope this helps.
